Youth movement on the rise in the Philippines and the diaspora

Both in the Philippines and abroad, youth and students have increasingly launched protests against various issues plaguing Filipino society. In August, youth and students launched campus protests across the archipelago to mark the opening of the new semester. The actions revived and carried forward the 2025 walkout movement against widespread corruption, primarily in flood control projects. In the US, youth were at the forefront of a national day of protest led by Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan)-USA to call for the release of Filipino-American activist Christine Pasion and Mangyan-Buhid organizer Binay Serrano.

Disaster and distrust: Bulakeños demand accountability over long-standing flood

Amidst systemic corruption and government inefficiency, hundreds of Bulakeños waded through floodwaters in a protest rally in Malolos City on August 31 to condemn the government’s failure to address Bulacan province’s long-standing flood crisis. Monsoonal rains and August typhoons submerged numerous towns across Bulacan, highlighting how corruption has compromised billion-peso flood control projects.

Filipino solidarity strengthened in Brussels amid three days of resistance

A three-day series of activities here brought together international solidarity, political discussions and collective action in defense of peace, democracy and the rights of peoples. The Friends of the Filipino People in Struggle (FFPS) Europe chapter held a gathering on August 28, actively participated in the People’s Festival of Resistance for Peace, Democracy and Liberation on August 29, and staged a culminating rally on August 30.

CPP commemorates Ka Benito and Ka Wilma

The Communist Party of the Philippine (CPP) through its Chief Information Officer Marco Valbuena marked the fourth year of the brutal murder of Benito Tiamzon (Ka Laan) and Wilma Austria-Tiamzon (Ka Bagong-Tao) by elements of the 8th ID in Catbalogan, Samar.
Valbuena said, “We remember Ka Benito and Ka Wilma for their selfless and total dedication to the Filipino people’s cause of national and social liberation...They sacrificed all as they performed their duties as leading cadres of the Communist Party of the Philippines. They vowed to fight US imperialism, feudalism and bureaucrat capitalism to the end, and championed the historic mission of the proletariat for socialism and communism.”
The quest to attain justice for Ka Laan and Ka Bagong-Tao and their companions continues.
Philippine workers defy crackdown as arrest warrants target union leaders

Labor groups and international rights organizations strongly condemned the issuance of arrest warrants against Filipino labor leaders, describing it as an intensifying state campaign to criminalize dissent and suppress demands for economic justice. The warrants target Jerome Adonis, chairperson of Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU); Jacq Ruiz, spokesperson of Kilusan ng Manggagawang Kababaihan (KMK); and James Anajao of Sandigan ng Manggagawa ng Quezon City.

People’s war advances despite regime’s suppression

Despite the ever intensification of the relentless counter-insurgency campaigns of the Marcos Jr’s regime together with US imperialism, the revolutionary people’s war in the Philippines continue to develop and advance in different regions. Despite having suffered major and minor losses in the past, the New People’s Army (NPA) has been able to advance and strengthen itself after the rectification movement in 2023.

CPP on IHL Day: Hold US-Marcos regime accountable for war crimes

In observing International Humanitarian Law (IHL) day on August 12, the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and the New People’s Army (NPA) reaffirmed their readiness to uphold the “Declaration of Compliance with International Humanitarian Law ” issued by the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) on August 15, 1991, which emphasized the NDFP’s voluntary compliance with Protocol II of the Geneva Conventions and IHL in general. At the same time, they held Marcos Jr armed forces backed by US imperialists for their continuing violations of human rights and international humanitarian law. They inflict the most brutal forms of fascist repression against the masses of workers and peasants, as desperate measures to preserve the ruling system of corruption, exploitation and oppression.
