Crackdown on activists amid PH exit from money laundering ‘grey list’

Various groups and activists have denounced the Marcos Jr. government’s use of the anti-terrorism and anti-money laundering laws to justify intensified crackdowns on dissent. This comes after the exit of the reactionary government from the FATF ‘s (Financial Action Task Force) grey list, which lists down countries that have serious deficiencies in their anti-money laundering laws.

Marcos Jr.’s ‘food emergency’ declaration, not a solution to agri crisis

The Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP – Peasant Movement of the Philippines) have criticized the Marcos regime’s plan to declare a “food emergency,” saying it is not a solution to the skyrocketing rice prices. “This is yet another short-term measure that does not address the root of the problem—the control of private traders and rice cartels over the supply and price of rice,” said Rafael Mariano, chairperson emeritus of KMP and former Agrarian Reform Secretary.

Secret transfer of US Typhon missile system, condemned

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) has condemned the “barefaced betrayal of the Filipino people’s independence and the country’s sovereignty” of the Marcos regime for “colluding with the US government and military for the secret transfer of the US Typhon missile system to an undisclosed location in the country”, in a statement last January 24, 2025.
