The most repressive election since dictator Marcos – International Observer Mission

The widespread irregularities and violence in the May 9 national elections in the Philippines undermined the democratic process that “took place in the most repressive context since the time of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos,” said Séverine de Laveleye, member of the Chamber of Representatives of the Federal Parliament of Belgium and Commisioner of the  International Observer Mission to the Philippine elections, when she presented the IOM interim report.

US advocates push for human rights investigation in the Philippines under Marcos II

Appalled by the prompt congratulatory message of US President Joe Biden on the proclamation of Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as president of the Republic of the Philippines, human rights advocates in the US criticized President Biden and proposed instead to investigate the human rights conditions in the Philippines.

Academics call for defense of truth and academic freedom vs. Marcoses

Philippine scholars and academics launched on 19 May the online petition, Manifesto in Defense of Historical Truth and Academic Freedom. “We want to bring out a strong statement in defense of historical truth against the unrelenting efforts to revise the historical record of plunder and human rights violations during Martial Law and the entire Marcos era,” said Professor Oscar Campomanes of the Ateneo de Manila University, one of the initiators of the Manifesto.

Reject the illegitimate Marcos II regime – CPP

The Communist Party of the Philippines called on the Filipino people on 13 May to “reject and resist the Marcos II illegitimate regime”, declaring that the 9 May Presidential elections “were manipulated to make it appear that Marcos won a ‘landslide’ victory.” The tandem of Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. and Sara Duterte-Carpio, according to the CPP, stole the 9 May national and local elections, “by rigging the Commission on Elections’ automated election system, vote-buying, armed coercion, systematic disinformation, mind manipulation, political deceit and historical distortion.”

Demands for release of Sen. De Lima mount amid witnesses’ retractions

Demands for the immediate release of jailed Philippine senator Leila de Lima is mounting, following the retraction of two major witnesses accusing Sen. De Lima of involvement in the illegal drug trade. Philippine human rights alliance Karapatan called on 3 May for the immediate release of Sen. De Lima, describing her arrest and continued detention as a “case of political persecution and repression.”

ARMAS publishes Golden Edition anthology of Philippine revolutionary art

Philippine revolutionary organization Artists and Writers of the People (ARMAS) published in April 2022 the Golden Edition of its cultural journal Ulos, in celebration of its 50th anniversary, and in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Communist Party of the Philippines and the New People’s Army. The Ulos Golden Edition contains 50 poems, songs, short stories, news rapportage and essays penned by revolutionary writers in the last five decades, adorned with selected illustrations from revolutionary artists.

NDFP celebrates 49 years

The National Democratic Front of the Philippines celebrated its 49th Founding Anniversary on 24 April. Messages of congratulations poured in from the NDFP allied organizations, led by the Communist Party of the Philippines: “Let us celebrate the achievements and victories of the NDFP in its work of uniting the Filipino people and mobilizing them along the path of the national democratic revolution.
