NPA checkpoint, armed offensives strike Marcos troopers

The New People’s Army launched a series of armed offensives in various parts of the country against the mercenary troops of the Marcos II regime in the second half of August. These resulted in the death of at least seven elements of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and Philippine National Police, and the wounding of several others. The successful NPA offensives belie claims by the Manila government of these regions as ‘insurgency-free’.

Rural Missionaries of the Philippines charged with ‘terrorism funding’

Prosecutors of the Marcos II government announced on 15 August the filing of criminal charges against 16 individuals for allegedly conspiring to divert money from foreign sources to fund the New People’s Army. The 16 individuals, including five Roman Catholic nuns and a lawyer, are part of the Rural Missionaries of the Philippines, a 53-year-old voluntary association of priests, nuns and lay missionaries that provide support for rural communities of peasants, agricultural workers fisherfolk and indigenous peoples.

5,843 human rights victims in Duterte’s last 6 months -- CPP Report

The Communist Party of the Philippines characterized the last six months of President Rodrigo Duterte’s term as “drenched in the blood of the victims of his failed all-out war.” In a report published on 16 July, the CPP cited 137 cases involving 5,843 victims of human rights violations perpetrated by Duterte’s security forces in the period of January to June 2022.

State terrorism push people to support armed revolution -- NDFP

The National Democratic Front of the Philippines chapter in Negros Island asserted on 13 August that the “all-out assault” of state security forces in central Negros to protect the interests of big business, landlords and compradors will pave “a clearer path for the people to support armed revolution.”

Joint US-RP patrols in West Philippine Sea condemned

The Communist Party of the Philippines condemned on 8 August the proposal for the military forces of the Republic of the Philippines and the US to conduct joint maritime patrols in the West Philippine Sea. Marco Valbuena, CPP Chief Information Officer, said, “Such a plan is inimical to the country as it further bounds the Philippines to the US military at a time that economic and military tensions between the US and China are rising.”

AFP killings, torture of civilians escalate further

Killings, torture, illegal arrests, destruction of livelihood and threats to community residents perpetrated by state security forces continue to escalate in Negros Island, in central Philippines. Juanito Magbanua, Spokesperson of the Negros Island Regional Operational Command of the New People's Army condemned the state terrorism, especially the practice of tagging civilians killed as high-ranking members of the NPA.

Filipino lawyer wins 2022 Baldwin Medal of Liberty

International human rights organization Human Rights First announced on 8 August the awarding of its 2022 Roger N. Baldwin Medal of Liberty to Philippine human rights lawyer Angelo Karlo Guillen. The Roger N. Baldwin Medal, named after one of the founders of the American Civil Liberties Union and the International League for Human Rights, is awarded to “extraordinary activists” as recognition and support for “advancing the protection of human rights at great personal risk.”
